Be a Hero

A few days ago, Enid and I, along with my buddy Marc had the pleasure of going to the Ingrid Michaelson and Matt Nathanson show at the 40 Watt in Athens. These two are phenomenal. I'll admit, I had never heard more than a few songs from Matt Nathanson - I had only begun to listen to him on Pandora a few weeks before the show.

Matt Nathanson

For those who don't know who Matt Nathanson is, think of people like Dave Barnes and Matt Wertz, with a little bit more vulgarity. If you don't know who they are, then just visit his website. Many of his youtube videos are of him playing shows by himself. So I was both surprised and delighted when he came out on stage with a full band. That's what Marc and I decided we love so much about singer songwriters - the fact that they sound great acoustic, but they sound stunning with a full band. Bands that start out full band and try to turn those songs into a purer form can't because they are in their purest form as a full band song.

I heard the best quote I've heard in a while that night. While Matt was on stage, he said that he saw an interesting quote in the bathroom. It went a little something like this: "Anyone can piss on the floor...be a hero......shit on the ceiling". That quote made my night.

Another thing that made my night was Ingrid Michaelson. Even though she opened for Matt, I am willing to bet that more people have heard her. Mainly for this reason:

Yeah, that's right, she does the "sweater song" from the Old Navy Commercial. I am embarrassed to admit that I had no idea she wrote that song until she started to play it. She played it accompanied by an upright bass and another amazing musician named Allie Moss (whom I had not heard of until that night).

All three of the musicians encountered were very very entertaining and I look forward to being able to follow their careers. This really makes me want to pick up a guitar and write again...
